Asalaam Aleykum

I know the topic sounds like it needs to be handled by a professional psychiatrist, but I’ll go at it any way (Let me know how I do in the comments)… SOooo yea sometimes we might reach points in our lives where we ask ourselves…who the hell am I??

Generally…and if you are smart…kidding… we all are (yea lets run with that)… then we might have separated the parts of us we are given(had no say in whatsoever) from the things we chose.

We didn’t choose our gender or the family we are born in, or the race, probably didn’t even choose our OWN NAMES!! (Shocker!…I know). But we can say we chose our religion, (if we did the research and decided to follow Islam), we might have chosen what we study, what we do… yeaa… but I learnt that, recognizing our major decisions still doesn’t tell us who we are, it tells us a part of it but that’s not enough.

What we are is a little bit more than just our major decisions in our life, its more about the little decisions we make on day to day, minute to minute basis. That’s us.

Though to be more accurate, it’s the things we do when no one is looking that define us. If we want to know who we are, we should just look at the things we do when we think no one is around to see us, or when we don’t care whether someone is there or not. The good the bad and the ugly. That’s the real us.

It’s us being sincere to ourselves, when we do things for us, that’s why I guess we are supposed to pray and ask Allah in secret and why doing things for others to see is not considered sincere

Allah says in the Quran

Surat Al-‘A`rāf  7:55

“Invoke your Lord with humility and in secret. He likes not the aggressors.”

We should be careful though that we don’t start doing things in secret so that we can seem righteous in our own eyes and assume everyone doing righteous deeds in front of people is doing something wrong, that would be a mistake and quite counterproductive.

So sit down (you are probably sitting) and find out who you are…

HINT: Well since you are reading this in secret…you are off to a good start…you are a good person, but ssssshhhhhh don’t tell anyone..

That’s all for now.

Love you all for the Sake of Allah.

      • The prompt of the paper was, “Who are you?” Basically they wanted to know who you are and to find out who you are, you need to look at your experiences and find something that had changed you. For example, a bullying problem, death, a new found interest, even a person. It depends. I never saw it as what you just explained. It makes sense.

  1. This post literally made me mentally go over the little decisions I’ve taken in the past couple of days. Wow. It makes so much sense. It’s a wonderful way of looking at it. Masha’Allah.
And I love the connection you’ve drawn between this post and the verse. Amazing. 🙂
    Barak Allahu feek!
